Two anglers are quietly seated and get a bite. They both pull out the same fish. Each of them claims to be the owner of it which leads to a quarrel and in the struggle, both fall into the water. A third fisher comes on the scene and casts in his line. To his great astonishment, he pulls out the two men who are still fighting. He tries to separate them, but they resent his interference and throw him into the water. Filled with remorse, one of them jumps in after him and seeing neither of them reappear on the surface, the other also follows suit and is lucky enough to get them out, which results in a general reconciliation. A group of fishermen, including Howard Hill, "the world's greatest archer," go in search of marlin off the California coast. With a fishing line attached to his arrow, Hill plans to spear the fish, which would then be brought aboard the boat by rod and reel.

In anticipation of cold weather, two bear cubs go fishing, which may be the last before the winter. The kids are watching the crumbling leaves, birds flying away and drifting clouds. They begin to think about how one can catch a cloud. Now they do not realize what an unusual catch in the form of a crescent and stars is in store for them. After his mothers death, 12-year-old Jaya (Iqbal S. Manurung) is sent to his father, Johar (Didi Petet), who works as a supervisor on a jermal (a fishing platform perched on log stilts in the middle of the sea). Johar is shocked, never knowing he has a son, and rejects the boy as his kin. Fully aware he cant bring Jaya back to land due to a dark past, Johar is forced to accept the boy as a worker on the site. Faced with constant rejection from his father and relentless bullying by the other boys who work on the jermal, Jaya decides to take fate into his own hands. He gives up hope on being accepted and learns the skills and attitude needed to survive on the jermal. Jaya increasingly becomes like the other boys: a tough, rough survivor; while Johar is forced to gradually face and accept his past. Eventually, both Johar and Jaya learn that they are bound by their past, united by the space in which they move, and connected by the inescapable truth.
